EVERY WISH HAS A COST BUT WILL THE SOCIETY BE WILLING TO PAY IT?

Once a hacker-for-hire living in the shadows, Josephina “Jo” Espinosa is the newest member of a magical Society. Their mandate? To grant the wishes of mortals. A simple enough task until Jo is faced with an impossible wish – and her inability to grant it might spell disaster for her entire team, if not the Society itself.

Jo is used to high-pressure situations, but after a string of disasters, the last thing she needs is stakes of this magnitude. Especially given that neither she nor the Society know quite what the consequences of failing to grant a wish might be.

The only person with answers is the Society’s aloof and cryptic leader, Snow. Yet while Jo is enigmatically drawn to the man, all their clandestine encounters leave her with only more questions about the true nature of the Society, her magic, and her own history.

Time is running out for the Society, and an executioner will rise from among them to exact the price of failure.

Note: I received an ARC copy of this via the authors for an honest review. This in no way influences my opinion.

After reading Society of Wishes, I was anxious to get my hands on this book. I loved the first book and I just needed to know how this story and world were going to develop – and I was not disappointed. This book had me so hooked and I fell in love with this world even more!

I think the best thing about this book was the wave of emotion on every single page. The authors really did a great job of making the emotions jump off the pages and it really added to my reading experience! I was invested in each and every character… well.. almost every character ( I hate Pan, #justsaying) and I really felt everything they were feeling throughout the book. It felt as if I were there with them and friends with them. There were times that I was crying ugly tears because I was so invested and affected by what was going on.

The book was extremely easy to get lost in. The character and plot developments, along with the world building and the emotions really swept me up into this world and kept me turning the pages. I had to know what was going to happen next and I ended up reading this book in one sitting because of that!

We got to know more about the characters and how they came to be in the society! I loved the fact that we got into some of the characters wishes and how different they seem! I loved the fact that the authors used actual historical events and based a couple of wishes around them explain why history took the turn that it did – along with creating their own histories (since the book is set in the future) to explain history affecting the characters as well. I also liked the fact that, whilst some of the wishes were on a larger scale that affected the course of history, other wishes really only impacted the characters themselves and the people in their lives. It was an even balance between the two and I liked the fact that not every character did something to help a whole nation of people because it kept the characters relatable.

We also got a little more into Snows character and I am infatuated! I was so intrigued by him in book one and I just kept gravitating toward him as a reader and wanting to know more about him – the same can be said about this one! I am still extremely intrigued by him and the history that he and Jo share and … I just want to know  everything, ok? He’s been around the longest and has seen everything and I just want to know what he knows… I am also completely and utterly curious about what his history is and how he ended up in the/creating the society! I need answers!

As mentioned previously, I hate Pan. I don’t want to go too much into it because spoilers, but I hate her character. She is such a dark and twisted character and, whilst I am intrigued to know more about her and how she ended up the way that she did, I also just want her to be killed off already. She still reminds me of a gender reversed Peter Pan, but an evil one.

I don’t want to get too much into the ending because, again, spoilers, but it broke me. I loved the fact that the authors didn’t take an easy ending and showed the idea that some things just don’t work out the way you expect them to, but it still broke me. I cried ugly tears for a good long while after finishing the book!

All in all, I absolutely loved this instalment! I enjoyed both the character and the plot development and the wave of emotions that left each and every page! I gave this book 5/5 stars.

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR.

Josephina Espinosa makes her living as a hacker-for-hire in the Lone Star Republic, a remnant of the fractured U.S.A. That is, until the day she and her best friend are gunned down in a government raid.

With her dying breath, Jo uses magical lore passed down from her grandmother to summon a wish-granter. Her wish? To save her friend’s life. Except wishes have costs, and for Jo, the price is the erasure of her entire mortal existence.

Now, as the most recent addition to the mysterious Society of Wishes, Jo must form a new “life” alongside the seven other members, one of which being her savior himself. Living as an occupant of the Society’s lavish mansion should be quite the perk, but while it is furnished with everything its inhabitants could possibly need, it lacks one thing—freedom.

Her otherworldly identity crisis takes a backseat, however, when Jo learns that the friend she sacrificed everything for is headed down the same path to ruin. Jumping in head-first, Jo uses her newfound magical abilities to protect him, only to realize that the ripples of her actions have far-reaching consequences. When the Society’s aloof leader Snow decides to give her a taste of his own ancient magic, Jo discovers that there are threads woven into the tapestry of her new reality that reach far beyond the wishes she is now required to grant. Ones that, if tugged on, could mean the unraveling of her existence itself.

Doesn’t this sound amazing! This will also be available on Kindle unlimited. There will also be a paperback version, which will be out a little later.

The Crown’s Dog by Elise Kova

Expected Publication: November 22nd 2016 by Silver Wing Press

A coastal summer is turned upside down by a violent murder, and a quest for lost pirate treasure turns into a hunt for the killer.

Jax Wendyll is the crown’s dog. As punishment for the unspeakable crimes that tourment him to this day, his life has been conscripted to the Empire Solaris. However, in an Empire afflicted by peace, his duties are relegated to unquestioningly aiding the antics of the youngest prince, Baldair.

Erion Le’Dan, a nobleman’s son, expects a quiet summer visit to the Imperial Palace, his only agenda to visit with his unlikely friends. But Jax’s discovery the legendary pirate Adela Lagmir’s old workroom inspires a hunt for her long lost treasure.

The pursuit of Adela’s truth takes the three men to the Imperial summer manor, built along the old pirate mainstays. When Adela’s trident is branded into a murdered servant, Prince Baldair’s summer amusement of treasure-hunting becomes a hunt to find the killer. But, as mysteries compound, the ghosts of Jax’s past may not be the only things haunting them.

Note: I received an ARC copy of this book in return for an honest review. This in no way influences my opinion.

When I woke up the other day to this book sitting in my inbox, to say I was excited was an understatement! I was reading the last of Crystal Crowned at the time and I absolutely loved all of the books in the Air Awakens series. So, to be getting novellas, aka, the chance to revisit this world before the events of AA, I was sold!! I couldn’t wait to find out more about the founding of the guard – in particular Jax!

I found it extremely easy to forget about the fact that this book was only a novella rather than a full sized book. It was easy to get lost in the story itself and the characters. I loved witnessing the interactions between the founding characters of the Golden Guard, as well as the brief glimpse we get of the relationship between Aldrik and Baldair and how it was previously. It definitely helped to highlight how far they had come in the AA series as a whole!

What I also love about this book is the fact that we got to see Jax and more inside of his head. We meet him at a time when he is extremely vulnerable and struggling to deal with what he had done etc. It was easy to feel sorry for him – I just wanted to wrap him up in bubble wrap and never let him go! I loved being inside of his head, and I hope that we get to see more from his perspectives in the next novellas to come!

I also enjoyed being inside Erion’s head. We didn’t really get to see enough of him in the AA series, despite the fact that he seems to be the person to keep most things (including Baldair) on the ground. He is the voice of reason, but still can’t avoid an adventure with Baldair. His constant thoughts of what was right and proper did seem to get a little irritating after a while, especially because his parents weren’t with him! At the same time, I guess it is something that had been ingrained into him, so its a habit!

Baldair. I really do love him, you know. I wish he was real. He seemed like the same Baldair here, as he was in the AA series. He probably grew a little more series in the AA series, but the main frame of the character remained the same. He was the same charming character that we all love with an amazing sense of humour!

I do feel like the plot suffered a little bit to focus on the characters. It was, in places, a tad slow and I feel like some things could have maybe been fleshed out a little more… although its supposed to be a novella. I did enjoy the plot overall and the conclusion was AMAZING!! I was not expecting to happen what happened!

I really enjoyed this novella and I cannot even wait for the next two! I really want to meet some more members of the Golden Guard and find out how they were recruited into the exclusive guard! I gave this book 4/5 stars!

Long live Solaris.

One bloodthirsty ruler has been overthrown by another, casting the shadow of death over the Solaris Empire. Vhalla Yarl stands upon the stage of fate, prepared to do battle one final time. Fragile alliances will be tested and new bonds will be formed as the world is reshaped. She fights as the champion of peace, but when the night is darkest will she be able to pay the price of a new dawn?

So, I have had this book on my Kindle since August – I feel guilty for not reading it sooner! Obviously after the ending of Water’s Wrath, I HAD to know what was going to happen and how this whole thing was going to end! I feel like the characters made some huge steps in this book, but at the same time the plot suffered a little bit.

I think Vhalla definitely became the strongest version of herself in this book. She finally accepted who she was and she rocked it! I loved her strength in this one and I cannot believe it took her this long to become this way! I feel like Aldrik definitely helped her to become the person that she did and it was amazing! The pushed each other to be better versions of themselves, whilst still remaining the typical every day couple that you see when they argue. I feel like their romance became more relatable because of the arguing that went on!

Victor is pure evil. I was not expecting him to become this bad!! Then ending was absolutely EPIC!! It reminded me of one of those boss levels you face when playing some kind of video game and I absolutely loved it. I enjoyed the turn the story took and the way Victor became at the end. I would have liked to have seen more of him throughout the book and how the crystals influenced him etc. I feel like that bit was missing and needed a little more depth to it.

I think my issue with the plot was that it felt like they were sort of wondering around the country with no real clear idea of what was going to happen or what they really wanted to achieve/how they wanted to achieve it. They formed some plans for sure, but it almost felt like most of the wins happened through pure luck rather than any particular planning on part of Vhalla/Aldrik. Vhalla also kept mentioning about being the future empress when Aldrik was technically out of a throne… which also became a tad irritating after a while.

I absolutely adored the last 20% of the book and the epilogue!! I think everything worked out brilliantly and the epilogue was probably my most favourite part of the book!! Especially because…I can’t say. However, I am left with some unanswered questions which I find a little irritating.

All in all, I quite enjoyed this book and it was a good end to a great series. I definitely look forward to future works from this author! I gave this book 4/5 stars.

Librarian turned sorcerer. Sorcerer turned hero. Hero turned puppet.

The Solaris Empire found victory in the North and, at the cost of her heart and her innocence, Vhalla Yarl has earned her freedom. But the true fight is only beginning as the secret forces that have been lurking in the shadows, tugging at the strings of Vhalla’s fate, finally come to light. Nowhere is safe, and Vhalla must tread carefully or else she’ll fall into the waiting arms of her greatest foe. Or former lover.

I have to say, I feel a little bit guilty for not reading this sooner. I have had this on my Kindle since August and I just never read it! However, I have read it and, while I feel it was a little slower than the other books in this series, I still really enjoyed it!

This book starts pretty much where the last one left off. We have landed where Vhalla currently is after running away from the camp – if you can remember the bit that BROKE me! Yes, I’m pretty sure we can. I definitely feel like the events at the beginning of the book with the Knights of Jadar and Jax needed to be panned out a little more because I feel like everything happened so fast without really an explanation of what was going on or what their plan was. I wanted a little more interaction before being thrown head first into what happened.

I definitely feel that Vhalla became that much stronger within this book. Despite everything that she has done for the empire, the Emperor still condemns her and still hates her – but she has definitely become a stronger character because of it. She is constantly finding new ways to outsmart him and I LOVE IT! She comes into her own more in this book also after what happened with Aldrik…

Aldrik also changed a lot within this book. I feel like the ending of Earth’s End and what happened to him, helped him to see what he was doing to himself and the fact that it was possible to change, all he needed to do was really want it and put the effort in. I definitely felt sorry for him at one stage in the book because it was horrible. I bawled like a baby and everything. Awful.

I definitely feel like this book meandered around a bit in the middle with the axe and victor and the Aldrik/Vhalla thing etc. However, we then got to That Part of the book. You know when you get to That Part of any book and its depressing and makes you bawl like a baby and you question whether the author has any sympathy/ampathy for absolutely anyone because it was something that really didn’t need to happen… but in a way it did for the story…. yeah – I got to That Part. And I was less than impressed. Literally miffed! Just… ugh!

This book did pick up for me after That Part because thats when everything interesting started going down and I could not peel my eyes away from my kindle! It was fabulous! This whole thing earned another star for this book on its own! Especially the ending!! I was all sorts of Gobsmacked and I didn’t know what to do with myself or the book and I was just … :-O Even now, I need to know what is going to happen next!

I enjoyed this book, but I feel like it needed a little more. The ending was amazing and I have already started CC because I NEED to know how this series ends! I gave this book 4/5 stars.

Earth’s End by Elise Kova

Earth’s End by Elise Kova

Published: February 11th 2016 by Silver Wing Press

A woman awoken in air, a soldier forged by fire, a weapon risen from blood.

Vhalla Yarl has made it to the warfront in the North. Forged by blood and fire, she has steeled her heart for the final battle of the Solaris Empire’s conquest. The choices before Vhalla are no longer servitude or freedom, they are servitude or death. The stakes have never been higher as the Emperor maintains his iron grip on her fate, holding everything Vhalla still has left to lose in the balance.

I literally went and bought this book in the Kindle Store straight after finishing Fire Falling. After the ending in Fire Falling, I HAD to know what happens next! My brain didn’t want to sleep, it wanted answers! Fire Falling was more of a character based book and I mentioned in my review that I hoped Earth’s End would be more of a plot based book – which it most definitely was!!!

Almost from the get go we have our very first mission! I loved how Vhalla’s loyalty to Aldrik remains unwavering – I mean, considering what she did!! I love the fact that she risks herself and her freedom to do what she did. I feel like she really comes into her own in this book by showing just how strong she is, both physically and mentally. I also loved the fact that she didn’t bow down to the Emperor Solaris and, when she did, it made him look bad – so it was more of a political move than anything else.

I think what I enjoyed the most about this book was the fact that it was almost non stop action. One thing after another after another led me to read this book as fast as I could and I was left on the edge of my seat! I think, through this, we definitely got to know the Emperor Solaris more and the way he is under stress – which is to say, not very nice!! Can we kill him off yet??

Jax!! I think it is understandable why everyone loves Jax! He is our favourite witty character, who knows how to lighten things up when everything gets too intense! Despite this, however, he knew when things got serious and he tried to deal with it in the best way possible – and then he went and made another joke! I actually really loved his character and I cannot wait to see more of him in this series!!

I also think that Aldrik comes a little bit into his own within this book. Whereas in previous books, he had barely suppressed actions of going against his dad, in this book he goes all out against his dad on things that he doesn’t think is right – especially when it comes to Vhalla. I loved the fact that he stood up for her to his father when he knows that she couldn’t (for example with the crystal cuffs) and on other matters as well. I think he is definitely shaping up to be an emperor of peace when his time comes!! I have to say, though, I did want to punch him at the end!! I hated the way he treated Vhalla and ugh. There are just no words.

That ending practically killed me! I was crying and earning the weird looks from my husband because I was bawling like a baby and he has no idea what is wrong with me! I mean – just as everything is going right, the comes along! like, seriously!! My brain did not want to compute what was happening!! So, here I am, silently crossing my fingers that all will turn out as planned!!

I really loved this book and I cannot wait to read Water’s Wrath!! I gave this book 5/5 stars!

Soldier… Sorcerer… Savior… Who is Vhalla Yarl?

Vhalla Yarl marches to war as property of the Solaris Empire. The Emperor counts on her to bring victory, the Senate counts on her death, and the only thing Vhalla can count on is the fight of her life. As she grapples with the ghosts of her past, new challenges in the present threaten to shatter the remnants of her fragile sanity. Will she maintain her humanity? Or will she truly become the Empire’s monster?

Fire Falling is the second book in the Air Awakens Series.

After reading Air Awakens, I literally had to buy the second book as soon as possible. I loved the first book and I loved this book even more! Especially after that ending! As soon as this book ended, I went to the amazon store and bought the third book! Of course, I couldn’t start reading it last night because it was late and I have to be up early with my son!

I liked Vhalla in this book – not to say I didn’t like her in the last book. I think the way in which her suffering was written was exactly the same way as a normal person with PTSD would be feeling. It felt authentic. However, I loved the way that Vhalla always found a new way to be strong and always stood back up no matter what happened to her or what was thrown at her. I loved her loyalty toward Aldrik. No matter what she was told or what stories were told to her etc. She always stood by his side no matter what. She was pretty fierce when it came to him and I totally ship them!

I also loved Aldrik. We got to see more of him within this book through the dream memories that Vhalla was having. It was easy to see why he became the way that he did and why he was so cut off and stayed away from everyone else. I actually felt really sorry for him and just wanted to wrap him up in a  bear hug! I definitely think he needed to open up a little bit more with Vhalla because she has proven herself time and again that she was loyal to him etc.

I think this book was definitely more character heavy than plot. It focused a lot on character development with all the characters, not just the two MC’s and, whilst some things did still happen, the plot was focused mostly on the march north to war. There were a few episodes that kept me on the edge of my seat (like that ending!! Hello!!) but, I did like the focus on character building – I hope that the next book, therefore, is more plot driven!

A certain someone’s death hit me really hard and I struggled not bawl like a baby all over again when it happened… mostly because my husband was next to me and I am pretty sure he would have thought that I am some sort of crazy lady!

Can I just say that ending?!? Like… seriously!! It was amazing and it was a cliff hanger and … let’s just say, if the next book hadn’tve been published by now, I would have been tearing out my hair. It was such a cliffhanger – it was actually petty abrupt! This is why I literally closed the book on my kindle, went into the kindle store and bought the next one. Which I am going to go and start (which I would have already started by the time you guys read this!)

I really enjoyed this book and I am loving the series so far as a whole! I cannot wait to start Earth’s End! I gave this book 5/5 stars!

Air Awakens by Elise Kova

Air Awakens by Elise Kova

Published: August 27th by Silver Wing Press

A library apprentice, a sorcerer prince, and an unbreakable magic bond…

The Solaris Empire is one conquest away from uniting the continent, and the rare elemental magic sleeping in seventeen-year-old library apprentice Vhalla Yarl could shift the tides of war.

Vhalla has always been taught to fear the Tower of Sorcerers, a mysterious magic society, and has been happy in her quiet world of books. But after she unknowingly saves the life of one of the most powerful sorcerers of them all—the Crown Prince Aldrik—she finds herself enticed into his world. Now she must decide her future: Embrace her sorcery and leave the life she’s known, or eradicate her magic and remain as she’s always been. And with powerful forces lurking in the shadows, Vhalla’s indecision could cost her more than she ever imagined.

So, I was a tad worried going into this book. I read a review by Cait @ Paper Fury and it wasn’t looking all the great. However, I am glad I decided to read this anyway because I loved it! Granted, it was a tad slow around the middle, but all in all, I think it was great!

I really liked Vhalla. She was a strong character in the unconventional sense. She had no idea what was going on, she didn’t know that she was a sorcerer or even what to do with her magic when she first got it, but she was strong willed and a character to look up to. She was a tad naive, which I think changes at the end of the book. Vhalla was definitely a character that I could easily be friends with. Plus, she works in a library!! What is better?!?

Can I just say Prince Aldrik? Need I say anything more? Like seriously? I mean, I disliked him at the beginning (c’mon, he pushed Vhalla off of a roof! Without warning!!) but he grew on me. He has that horrible, prince thing about him, that changes when you dig deeper into his personality. I totally grew to love him and I hated the fact that everyone had such a low opinion of him! I mean, he is the cutest prince ever. *Ahem*

I really enjoyed the plot. I loved the beginning and the action at the end definitely had me on the edge of my seat – and I was not expecting that trial to go the way that it did! However, I had to knock off a star because I feel like the middle was lacking something. It was enjoyable watching Vhalla learn magic and whatnot, but I feel like it needed more action. Everything seemed to come way too easily for her and I just wanted something more. Excuse my pickiness!

By the way, what is Egmun’s deal?!? Dude is a … I mean, seriously! Vhalla didn’t even do anything to him, all she was doing was hanging with Aldrik and the guy decides that he wants Vhalla dead?? I mean… what on earth is that all about! Dude needs to disappear somewhere horrible and never come back!

I really enjoyed this book, although I can see why there would be mixed opinions about it. I look forward to carrying on with this series! I gave this book 4/5 stars.
