Goodreads Monday

Hey Guys! It has been a LONG time since I did one of these – again, sorry about that hiatus. I have been reading more recently, but I just wanted to get back into the swing of reading again without the pressure of writing a review afterward. However, I do want to start doing these again and hopefully get back at the whole review thing soon.

Anyway, this weeks pick for me is a book that I am so stoked to get. I absolutely LOVED the first instalment and I will probably swing by the bookstore later today (it’s Saturday at the time of writing this) to see if they have it in stock!

Published: September 18th 2018 by G. P. Putnams Books for Young Readers

Emika Chen barely made it out of the Warcross Championships alive. Now that she knows the truth behind Hideo’s new NeuroLink algorithm, she can no longer trust the one person she’s always looked up to, who she once thought was on her side.

Someone’s put a bounty on Emika’s head, and her sole chance for survival lies with Zero and the Blackcoats, his ruthless crew. But Emika soon learns that Zero isn’t all that he seems–and his protection comes at a price.

Caught in a web of betrayal, with the future of free will at risk, just how far will Emika go to take down the man she loves?

November Wrap Up

Hey guys! I hope you all had a great November. I decided to fill this post out as the month went on rather than all at once at the end of the month and it has definitely helped! This post hasn’t taken nearly as long as it wold have done if I had done it all at once and I think I am definitely going to keep filling out my Wrap Up posts throughout the month. Looking back over the month, I definitely need to go onto a book buying ban until at least the new year! I feel like I had a great reading month and I am well on my way to completing this year’s Goodreads Reading Challenge with 87/90 books read so far.

Warcross by Marie Lu

Published: September 12th 2017 by G. P. Putnam’s son book for Young Readers

My Review

Amazon: Warcross

For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.

Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.

This has been a fantastic month for me and I cannot even believe that it is nearly the end of the year already! In other news, I have already put the Christmas decorations up (bar the tree) and the house is looking pretty festive!

How has your month been? Feel free to let me know in the comments and feel free to add your links to monthly wrap ups so I can see what you guys have been up to!

I was extremely hesitant to buy a copy of this book purely because I haven’t liked any of Marie Lu’s previous works. I saw this in the bookshop quite a few times before deciding to buy it on a whim. I’d heard great things about it, so I thought I would give her another chance to blow me away. I am so glad I did because I absolutely LOVED this book! I can FINALLY say that there is a Marie Lu book out there that I like!

I would like to start off with the world building – it was rich, descriptive and definitely could have been something from the future – the near future at that. I constantly found myself wishing that someone would invent Video Tanaka’s Glasses already so that I could have some fun with them as well! I was completely drawn into the technology of the world and they way in which is was set up to be a part of the real world when you are wearing the glasses. The points system to level up was fun and even the bad aspects of Warcross made it all that much more realistic! I was a huge fan of the world that Lu built, around some technology that we already know, but was taken about 1,000 steps further.

I loved Emika as a character. She was definitely rough around the edges, as befitting the kind of life that she had, but she wasn’t apologetic about it. She was still a good person, despite having had a hard start and she stayed true to herself throughout the book. She would rather help people, than have them help her and that definitely hindered her in some aspects, but I loved watching her personality grow and change around the other characters and the way in which she was at the end with her other team mates. Her inner fangirling over meeting her hero (Hideo) was definitely relatable to me as a reader. I enjoyed watching their relationship grow as they got to know each other and the way in which the dynamic changed at the end.

I also enjoyed getting to know Hideo over the period of the book. We don’t find out a lot about him at the beginning because he is a very private character, but as he opens up toward Emika, we get to know him better – his past and the reason behind Warcross. I liked him throughout the book and often felt sorry for him and what he went through as a child. However, at the end of the book when everything was revealed, I felt torn about him as a character. I have so many questions about his past and what actually happened (if you have read the book, you will understand what I mean) rather than what he has created his memory to be… or recreated in this case.

This plot kept me completely hooked throughout the book. Between the legit Warcross games, to the hacking that was going on in between, going to the Dark World and meeting Zero, I couldn’t put this book down. The plot was fast paced and there was never really a moment where I felt bored or like I wanted to go an do something else. I constantly wanted to know what was going to happen next.

I had figured out who Zero was before Emika did an after a certain memory from Hideo and I was glad to see that I was right. Having said that, I now have SO MANY QUESTIONS about their past, what really happened, where he has been etc. that I just need the second book already. This book has definitely left me wanting more and I cannot wait for the next instalment!

Whilst I figured out who Zero was, I didn’t understand why he was doing what he was doing… until the very end. By the end of the book, I felt played like a fool and spat out on the other side… in a good way! The ending shocked me completely and I am so torn about how to feel. On the one hand, I understand based on other things that happened why the ending happened that did, but on the other side, it is so inherently wrong, that it is unforgivable! Especially with the questions I have about Hideo’s past and what truly happened, I am so excited to continue this series!

All in all, I absolutely loved this book! The world building was strong and the characters and plot line bounced off that strong world. I felt played as a reader and I loved every second of it! I cannot wait for the next instalment. I gave this book 5/5 stars!

The Young Elites by Marie Lu

the young elites

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.

Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.

Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.

Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.

It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt. (Goodreads)

I am afraid to say that this book is a DNF. I really wanted to like this book, especially because I gave this author a second chance after being disappointed with the Legend series – but this book just wasn’t for me.

I found this book to be a really slow read. It was too easy to pack the book away and go and find some other source of entertainment. I didn’t feel the need to carry on reading the book; I wasn’t addicted to the book like I am with others.

I found the characters fairly irritating. Aside from the fact that they had really odd names, I couldn’t connect with any of them – they didn’t feel realistic and they weren’t characters who I found easy to relate too. I found myself rolling my eyes and putting the book down because I found them so irritating – I don’t even know why!!

The story also made very little sense… either that or I just haven’t read far enough into the story to actually understand. Where did the fever come from and how did they get rid of it? why have some people ended up with superpowers and marks, whilst others haven’t? It all makes no sense.

I am pretty sure that Marie Lu would appeal to some people, and I wouldn’t say don’t read the book just because I have a bad opinion of the book. Her writing style just isn’t for me and I gave this book 1/5 stars.

Top Ten Tuesday

toptentuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the Broke and Bookish!

Hey guys! Before I go into this post I just want to say happy anniversary to my amazing husband! Feels like I have been married to him for a lifetime rather than just three years – but in a good way! 😀

So, this week’s TTT is Top Ten Hyped Books That I Have Never Read. This post could cause a few people some heart attacks – so try not to be too surprised!!

10. the fault in our stars The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. *Ducks head* Yes, I have never read this book and no, I don’t really have the intention of reading this book. After seeing it everywhere, the hype of the film coming out etc. I just cannot face opening this book. I may be missing out I may not be – who knows? It could be that after some time, I might attempt to crack open this book – that will take a while though!

9. the wrath and the dawn The Wrath and The Dawn by Renee Ahdieh. This book was recently all the rage and I did actually attempt to jump on the bandwagon and read it. I, however, did not get very far in and I ended up DNFing it.

8. an ember in the ashes An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir. This book is actually on my TBR list and there it will most likely remain until I have forgotten the amount of hype that surrounded this book upon its release. I have the horrible feeling that this is going to be one of those books that I am really going to want to love and I just won’t…

7. red rising Red Rising by Pierce Brown. I actually red the synopsis of this book no less than 1,000 times before finally deciding to add it to my TBR list. Since then I just haven’t opened it – I have the funny feeling I just won’t like it.

6. Heir of Fire Heir of Fire by Sarah J. Maas. This is a series that I started and absolutely loved. I feel like that hype that surrounds this series is even justified – why I haven’t read this book yet is beyond me… especially considering the fact that I own a copy! This is a faceplate moment, I think!

5. Anything Sarah Dessen has written. She has written a fair few books – some of these books are even on my TBR list. Have I read any of them? No. Have I attempted to read any of them? No. Will I? Yes, at some point. Hopefully soon!

4. cinder Cinder by Marissa Meyer. This is a series that took me forever to add to my TBR list based purely on the fact that I love the original story of Cinderella. It is my favourite Disney film and was as a child too. After finally adding it, I never got around to actually reading it because of the hype surrounding it and still surrounds it!

3. under the never sky Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi. This is just one of those books that I had every intention of reading and still do, but my TBR list just hasn’t allowed me to get around to it!

2. the maze runner The Maze Runner by James Dasher. I actually went and saw this in the cinema with my husband (unfortunately in German), but the book never really appealed to me.

1. the young elites The Young Elites by Marie Lu. Again, this is a book that I own but have never gotten around to actually reading it! I will… At some point!

What about you guys? Feel free to leave comments and links in the comments section below and I will check them all out!
