Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor

Published: March 28th 2017 by Hodder & Stoughton

The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around—and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he’s been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it. Then a stunning opportunity presents itself, in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance or lose his dream forever.

What happened in Weep two hundred years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? What exactly did the Godslayer slay that went by the name of god? And what is the mysterious problem he now seeks help in solving?

The answers await in Weep, but so do more mysteries—including the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo’s dreams. How did he dream her before he knew she existed? And if all the gods are dead, why does she seem so real?

Welcome to Weep.

I just want to start off this review by mentioning how BEAUTIFUL this book is! I have the UK signed edition with the blue sprayed edges and it is easily one of the most asthetic books sitting on my shelf right now. This is made all the better by the fact that the story within the pages was just as beautiful as the actual book itself! I was completely hooked with the world that Laini Taylor has created and I absolutely need the next instalment… I needed it yesterday!

The world building in this book is extremely vivid. I definitely felt transported to the world Taylor created – I wish I was there! Taylor’s description was lyrical and poetic, which helped to lull the reader and keep them hooked! I loved the imagery created – both within the dream states and the “real world”, especially in the sense of contrasting between a dreamscape and a harsh reality. I would revisit this world in the next instalment just to find out more about this world and the things inside of it!

I really liked Lazlo from the beginning. He is extremely relatable to us readers (hello – librarian!) and he was an easy going character who I could see myself being friends with if he really existed. He always helped others without expecting anything in return (much to Thyon’s chagrin) and it was fun watching him experience firsts with Sarai. I definitely feel like the ending has changed him in a big way – whether that is for the good or the bad remains to be seen, but I cannot see him doing anything bad. Well, unless Minya has her way.

I think Thyon is supposed to be a character that we would struggle to get along with, however, I found him to be misunderstood. He was definitely difficult to love because of his attitude towards others, but at the same time, I feel like he struggled under the stress his parents put him under and he didn’t know how to react to kindness. I feel like his upbringing has caused him to be suspicious of anyone helping him out and I think it’s caused him to see a trick lying in wait when someone does help him, even when there isn’t one. This makes him cautious and he distrusts most people around him – which is why he is misunderstood.

I think what I enjoyed most about this story was the fact that we got multiple POVs. Most books are told through the eyes of the hero – so when I was introduced to both sides of the story – whether through Lazlo, Sarai, Eril-Fane, Minya’s snippet etc. we are always getting all sides of the story. It helped to create an understanding as to why each character was feeling and doing what they were doing because each has a different understanding and experience of The Carnage. It keep the readers torn between all of the characters because it is so easy to understand why Eril – Fane and the community of weep has a hatred for the Gods and the Godspawn, but it was also extremely easy to understand why Minya has a hatred of Eril-Fane and the humans in general because of what she experienced. She was still a difficult character to like because of the lengths she will go to get her revenge, but I can understand why she feels the way she does… even if it was only through a snippet of a PoV.

I really enjoyed Sarai as a character! She is one of the only characters who sees both sides of the coin from the very beginning and she is someone who has to deal with the fact that she can understand the viewpoint of the humans and the viewpoint of the godspawn – who she considers to be her family. She struggles to reconcile with the fact that she no longer feels the hatred that Minya does, and it takes her a while to actually start defying Minya in her own way. I enjoyed watching her grow along side Lazlo (Taylor – STOP BLOWING HOLES IN MY SHIP!!)… I can’t say anything more without ruining it.

Whilst the romance aspect happened pretty quickly, it didn’t feel like an insta love kind of situation! I felt like it was right and that the two character fit together. I don’t want to give too much of the story away which is why I’m being a bit vague about things… However, Taylor definitely does know how to throw a wrench in the works – first DoSaB and now this! :-O

Also, THAT ENDING!!! I CAN’T EVEN FUNCTION! I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS NEXT!!

Anyway, all in all I absolutely loved this book! The writing was extremely vivd and poetic and I loved the way in which Laini brought in all of the voices in various PoVs, without any of the PoVs blurring together. Each voice sung on their own and stood out and it was easy to discern who the character was that we were reading, even without an introduction to the character we were currently reading. I definitely cannot wait for the next instalment and gave this book 5/5 stars.

Hey guys!! It is time for another TTT and this week I am being resourceful for once and I am writing this on a Monday evening whilst my son is in bed!! I tend to write these posts with my son making a grab for my laptop! 😀 I call this progress ;-). This weeks topic is Books that I have read based on other reviewers recommendations/reviews. I have picked up quite a few books because I have read reviews and Just think that I have to read it! So, these are my top ten, and in no particular order:

10. the girl with all the gifts The Girl with All the Gifts by M. R. Carey. I read this pretty recently, but I think I would never have picked it up if I hadn’tve read it if I didn’t read Cait’s review first. If you don’t know who Cait is, then clearly you live under a rock! Her reviews are always amazing, whether good or bad, and I absolutely lover her! Check out Paper Fury!

9. throne of glass Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas – Way back when I first started out, I followed a blog called Rainy Tree Reader, and a lot of the books that she read and reviewed were books that I ended up picking up purely because I loved her review style. Sadly, Danica doesn’t write anymore, which I find sad, but I like to go back to her site every now and then.

8. the lost knight The Lost Knight by Candy Atkins. I Actually first heard of this book thanks to Olivia at Heir of Glitter. I added it onto my TBR thanks to her review and I snagged a review copy from Xpresso Tours recently and I LOVED it! I am so stoked for book 2!

7. IMG_0720 Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes. I didn’t pick this book up based on one particular reviewer, more like I saw so many amazing reviews that I decided to finally buy a copy! I still need to read the rest of this series, but the first book was amazing!

6. the selection The Selection by Kiera Cass. Again, I loved the raving review from Danica at Rainy Tree Reader and added it to my TBR pretty much right away. I absolutely loved this series and I cannot wait to see more from this author.

5. Shatter Me Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi. To be honest, I don’t even remember who I saw this from! I remember seeing a raving review and the cover is obviously to die for, so I went ahead and read it! One of my all time favourite series! 😀

4. forbidden Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma. I have a lot to the Danica for. I wish she still wrote! This is one of my ALL TIME favourite stand alones!

3. cinder Cinder by Marissa Meyer – Again, this book I picked up based on the multiple raving reviews I read! I still need to read Winter, though. Casually kicking myself right about now!

2. Daughter of smoke and bone Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor – Again, a whole bunch of raving reviews! I cannot wait for this authors next book!

1. dragonlance The Dragonlance Chronicles by Magaret Weis and Tracy Hickman – My dad owns these books and he recommended them to me ages ago, when I was still in school. I gobbled them all up!! The chronicles and the Dragonlance Legends are are amazing and I recommend them to absolutely everybody! Start with the Chronicles and go onto the Legends afterward! 😀

Thats it from me! So thank you to all you amazing people for recommending and reading and being generally awesome 🙂

What books did you pick up from other people? Feel free to leave links and comments and I will check them all out!

Hey guys! This weeks TTT is a Thanksgiving Freebie! So, the only thing I seem to actually know about Thanksgiving is what I see in the movies – Family and enough food to last a few months! Anyway, away from American holidays, I am going to do top ten series I am thankful for! There are so many series that I just LOVE and I am not sure what I would do if they didn’t exist. Of course, I also have to narrow it down! In no particular order:

10. Shatter Me Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi. I adore this series!! Especially because this is the first book in which I fell in love with the seemingly evil character instead of the character that we are supposed to love!

9. Introductions, ghost bird Introductions by C. L. Stone. The Ghost Bird series is something that I am addicted to. I get withdrawal symptoms whilst having to wait for the next instalment.

8. game of thrones A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin. This is a given – anything that is great on the big screen and in print is worth a spot on this list!

7. the selection The Selection by Kiera Cass. A dystopian version of The Bachelor – what’s not to love?

6. Daughter of smoke and bone Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. “Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love. It did not end well.”

5. cinder The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. I was late to jump onto this bandwagon – but better late than never!

4. throne of glass Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. I actually really need to catch up with this series, but I love what I have read of it!

3. Queen of Someday The Stolen Empire by Sherry D. Ficklin. Historical fiction… I adored this series from the very beginning and I cannot wait to read the last instalment.

2. defy Defy by Sara B. Larson. A strong female lead and a lot of action – anyone who doesn’t love this series lives clearly under a rock. Again, I cannot wait for the last instalment!

1. Splintered Splintered by A. G. Howard. For the madness in all of us!

So, this is it (here I am). What did you guys do? Feel free to leave comments and links below.

Hey guys! It has been a while since I have done one of these and what a week to decide to come back to it! This week is top ten quotes from book that I have read in the past year or so. However, I am going to change this slightly to my favourite quotes from books in general. So, in no particular order:

10. “A mind needs books as a sword needs whetstone, if it is to keep its edge.” George R. R. Martin, A Game of Thrones

9. “Becoming fearless isn’t the point. That’s impossible. It’s learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from it.” Veronica Roth, Divergent

8. “The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.”  J. R. R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

7. “Fear cuts deeper than swords.” George R. R. Martin, A Game of Thrones

6. “The more you know who you are, and what you want, the less you let things upset you.” Stephanie Perkins, Anna and the French Kiss.

5. “Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love. It did not end well.” Laini Taylor, Daughter of Smoke and Bone.

4. “Books are easily destroyed. But words will live as long as people can remember them.” Tahereh Mafi, Unravel me

3. “It takes ten times as long to put yourself back together as it does to fall apart.”  Suzanne Collins, Mockingjay

2. “Libraries were full of ideas–perhaps the most dangerous and powerful of all weapons.”  Sarah J. Maas, Throne of Glass

  1. “No one knows what he or she is capable of until things are at their darkest.”  A. G. Howard, Splintered.

That’s it! I think a lot of these quotes are either bookish or relevant to current events – hence the reason they are some of my favourite quotes at the moment! What were yours? Feel free to leave comments and answers below!

Hi guys! Can’t believe we’r halfway through the year already – where is it going??? This weeks TTT is top ten books that I’d like to see as films/TV Shows. This is a hard one, especially (and we all know it), the books are always better than the films! However, here are my choices, in no particular order:

10. dragonlance Dragonlance by Magaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. I have read both the Chronicles series and the Legends series and I think, if done right, these books would make epic films! Just like Lord of the Rings!

9. the walls around us The Walls Around Us by Nova Suma. Not entirely sure how they would film it to get the right atmosphere, but I reckon this could be quite creepy!

8. Shatter Me Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi. For anyone who knows me/follows my blog etc. will know that I absolutely adore this series! I would love to see what they could do with it on screen!

7. Splintered Splintered by A. G. Howard. I reckon Tim Burton’s imagination could handle this – what do you guys think?

6. the selection The Selection by Kiera Cass. I guess this one is technically cheating since Warner Bros recently bought the film rights for this series – but I am still looking forward to it!

5. say her name Say Her Name by James Dawson. My life is missing a decent horror movie – or maybe I just don’t scare easily? Either way, this could make for a good horror movie! 🙂

4. Daughter of smoke and bone Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. Again, this could be a great film – if the film industry could handle such awesomness…

3. The Iron Trial The Iron Trials by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare. This would be a challenge because of the high risk that it would be just like Harry Potter!

2. rites of passage Rites of Passage by Joy N. Hensley. With a little bit of everything in this book – it could easily be a crowd pleaser if done right.

1. Dangerous Girls Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas. Again, another challenge. If they got the psychology right and portrayed it in the right way, this could be as enjoyable as the book.

That’s it! What do you guys think? Feel free to leave opinions, answers and links in the comments section below.

Hi guys! This weeks TTT is based on our favourite heroines! There are so many to pick from, I am not even sure where to start! so in no particular order:

10. Shatter Me Juliette from Shatter Me. I loved her as a character. She is strong, she never gave up but she also learned through her mistakes and she took the advice of others.

9. the hunger games Katniss from The Hunger Games. I can see Katniss being on a lot of lists this week – so we don’t need to say much, other than she is a strong character!

8. Introductions, ghost bird Sang from the Ghost Bird Series. While she isn’t a strong character in the sense of Katniss or Juliette, Sang is strong in her own way. She is a quick learner and very very loyal. Her character is constantly growing, which is what I love about her.

7. throne of glass Celaena from Throne of Glass. Again, another strong female lead who I can see being on quite a few lists!

6. the selection America from The Selection. America is strong willed and stubborn, but this doesn’t stop her character from learning throughout the series. She is also a loyal character. Some things don’t get her down, whereas others do and I feel like this makes her more realistic.

5. Divergent Beatrice/Tris from Divergent. Obvious choice – again!

4. Red Queen Mare from Red Queen. Mare is a fighter. She doesn’t just sit back and take what they throw at her. “Anyone can betray anyone.”

3. Splintered Alyssa from Splintered. While currently reading Ensnared, I am reminded of just how much I love Alyssa! She takes the word crazy and gives it a whole new meaning – and she does this in style!

2. Daughter of smoke and bone Karou from Daughter of Smoke and Bone. Karou is a character who never gives up. No matter what happened throughout this entire series, she pushed through it and found a solution to whatever problem was facing her.

1.defy Alexa from Defy. I think if you gave anyone a female lead who is forced to disguise herself as a boy, who manages to earn a place on the elite prince’s guard, that they will love her!

This was such a hard choice! I feel like there are so many more that I left out of the spotlight and I am left feeling guilty! What were your choices? Feel free to leave a link or your answers in the comments below and I shall check them out! 🙂
