Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the Broke and Bookish

Hey guys! It is time for another TTT! This week is it a Halloween freebie! So, I am going to go with top ten scary/creepy books the read around this time for year! Without further ado and in no particular order:

10. the dead house The Dead House by Dawn Kurtagich – This book had me wide awake in the middle of the night, with all the lights on in the house, on the phone to my husband asking when he is going to be home. To say it creeped me out would be an understatement!

9. the merciless The Merciless by Danielle Vega – This book was creepy in the sense that it was gross and had my body tingling all over from what they did to that poor girl. Definitely Halloween material…

8. the girl with all the gifts The Girl with all the Gifts by M. R. Carey – Zombies and Halloween go hand in hand!

7. Unnatural deeds Unnatural Deeds by Cyn Balog – Ok, so technically this book is being released November 1st… but, it is definitely a creepy read and the ending!!!

6. only ever yours Only Ever Yours by Louise O’Neill – This is not your traditional Halloween creepy, but I think everyone who has read this book will agree with me that it deserves to be up here!

5. wink poppy midnight Wink Poppy Midnight by April Genevieve Tucholke – Three screwed up teens, what could go wrong? A lot… that’s your answer!

4. ten Ten by Gretchen McNeil – A fast paced, whodunnit…

3. gone girl.jpg Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn  – Do I really need to explain this one?!? Let’s go with one word: Amy.

2. say her name Say Her Name by James Dawson – Bloody Mary is tradition on Halloween…

1. Don't look back Don’t Look Back by Jennifer L. Armentrout – I really enjoyed this book and I was not expecting the ending!!

That’s it! These are my TT scary/creepy books to read around this time of year!

Have any of you read these? Do you agree? Are there any others I should read? Feel free to drop comments and links and I will check them all out!

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the Broke and Bookish

Hey guys! Firstly, I just want to say happy blogoversary to the Broke and Bookish! 6 years is a long time! This weeks TTT is top ten favourite releases of 2016 so far. A couple of these books haven’t been released this year yet and some of the books were released last year because I haven’t read 10 books that have been released this year so far! I’m a rebel, what can I say? In no particular order:

10. the crown The Crown by Kiera Cass. Published May 3rd by HarperTeen. I loved the entirety of The Selection series! So, you can imagine my relief when my wait for this book was finally over!

9. ACOMAF A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas Published May 3rd by Bloomsbury USA Children’s. This was the book of the year for me! I bought this book the day it came out on my kindle, I read it, and then went and bought a physical copy of the book – I am that much in love!

8. Glass sword Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard. Published February 9th by HarperTeen. Again, another book I bought myself a physical copy of for myself, because it is another series that I love! Plus, the title for the third book is being released tomorrow by Epic Reads – if anyone is interested!

7. wink poppy midnight Wink Poppy Midnight by April Genevieve Tucholke. Published March 22nd by Dial Books. If your looking for a book that isn’t all that it seems that is full of a bunch of whacked out teenagers… then this book is perfect for you!

6. this is where it ends This is Where it Ends by Marieke Nijkamp. Published January 5th by Sourcebooks Fire. I hyped this book up to myself long before its release date and it didn’t disappoint! i had been looking for a book that took place during the shooting for quite some time and this book delivered in every way!

5. wrecked maria Wrecked by Maria Padian. Publish date October 4th 2016 by Algonquin Young Readers. ok, so technically, this book doesn’t belong on this list because it has yet to be released. However, I am a rebel. I read an ARC copy of this book and I loved it! Such a unique take on sexual assault!

4. one was lost One Was Lost by Natalie D. Richards. Publish Date October 4th 2016 by Sourcebooks Fire. Another book that technically shouldn’t make this list. However, I read an ARC over the weekend and it was an amazing read!

3. endure Endure by Sara B. LarsonPublished December 29th 2015 by Scholastic Press. This was the third and final instalment in the Defy series and I was sorry to see it end!

2. spelled Spelled by Betsy Schow. Published June 2nd 2015 by Sourcebooks Fire. This book had me laughing out loud – in a pretty unladylike manner – and I had stitches in places I didn’t even know existed! Definitely worth the read!

1. what we sa What We Saw by Aaron Hartzler. Published September 22nd 2015 by HarperTeen. This book was based on a true story (The Steubenville High School Rape Case) and I think it represented the controversy of the case well. It deals with some really tough issues and highlights important ones too!

That’s me! I loved all of these books! What books have been your favourites so far this year? Feel free to leave links and comments and I will check them all out!

Wink Poppy Midnight by April Genevieve Tucholke

wink poppy midnight

Every story needs a hero.
Every story needs a villain.
Every story needs a secret.

Wink is the odd, mysterious neighbor girl, wild red hair and freckles. Poppy is the blond bully and the beautiful, manipulative high school queen bee. Midnight is the sweet, uncertain boy caught between them. Wink. Poppy. Midnight. Two girls. One boy. Three voices that burst onto the page in short, sharp, bewitching chapters, and spiral swiftly and inexorably toward something terrible or tricky or tremendous.

What really happened?
Someone knows.
Someone is lying. (Goodreads)

This book was pretty hyped up before it came out, so obviously, it made my TBR – like it made most TBR’s. I think I got about 3 pages in and my first reaction was that Poppy was an evil psychopath. However, as I read on, this seemed to be the least of this books worries…

Midnight. Not entirely sure why these two are pretty much fighting over him. He seems to be a fairly boring sort of guy – or maybe he just isn’t my type. There is nothing that wows me about him. He also seems to have absolutely no spine! First he goes along with what Poppy wants because he is convinced he is in love with her – and then he goes along with Wink, because he doesn’t like Poppy anymore! Even though he thinks what he is doing is wrong… he still does it!

Poppy is someone who I would normally run away from and hide underneath a rock. She comes across as a complete psychopathic bully. She is used to getting her way and that’s it – if she doesn’t get her way… well, I need a bigger rock to hide underneath!! What I liked about Poppy, though, is that she changed throughout the book. She knew what was making her unhappy and she changed it by the end of the book. She made a kind of progress where other people in this book hadn’t.

Wink’s character blurred the lines between fantasy and reality. She pretty much lived through connections with stories, and she seemed to be a story herself! Her style of narrating was very whimsical and I struggled to tell the difference between what was real from her point of view and what was fictional. She did, however, by the end of the book, turn out to be the craziest of all! With the twist that came at the end, I was questioning everything about this book. She turned out to be a crazy liar – probably someone Midnight should not have been hanging around with!

After the twist came out and Wink revealed what she did, I was confused as to why Midnight decided to still hang around with her until he did what he did! Why would you hang out with someone who revealed what she did and who turned out to be a crazy woman?!? Seriously, Midnight – you need to get your sh*t together!

What enjoyed about this book was the general darkness throughout. These teens were seriously messed up and it made for a pretty interesting story. What I didn’t like about it was the fact that it seemed a little bit slow and all of the twists seem to come at the same time. I think this could have easily been spread out over the entire book. I do, also, want to know what happened to Roman Luck – did he leave and start a new life all over again, or was he forced out of house… or was it something more sinister?

Overall, I enjoyed this book, despite the sometimes slow nature of it. It is definitely a book that I would recommend, though! I gave this book 4/5 stars.
