A lush and gorgeously written debut, packed with action, intrigue, and a thrilling love triangle.

Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king’s army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince’s guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can’t prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory.

The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she’s sworn to protect? (Goodreads)

W.O.W I loved this book. Give me something similar to Mulan and I am sure to love it because Mulan is amazing, to me.

I loved Alexa as a character. She is a very strong woman and a great example of how women should be today. She overcame something terrible and still did her duty in the guise of a man rather than a woman. Her interactions with the people around her were great and I loved reading them.

when I read in the blurb that there would be two men vying for her heart, I was a bit skeptical. This wasn’t a cheesy triangle though; she had already fallen for Damian which left little room for any sort of triangle.

I liked Damians growth as a character. At first all we see is a spoilt brat, but as the book continues, we begin to get a picture of his true self. I liked this Damian a lot more than the one we were first introduced to.

However, that ending! It killed a little bit of me. Bravo to Alexa, though, for defeating the evil Iker. She refused Damian though – and hurt him in the process! This is not how it was supposed to end!!

I gave this a 5/5 and I can’t wait for the next book!!!
